Graduate Studies in Biology leo
The Department of Biology is committed to graduate training of the highest quality. Its programs are sufficiently flexible to permit training in diverse research areas and to allow for the natural evolution of new specializations or unusual combinations of areas of interest. Graduate programs leading to either the M.S. or Ph.D. degree are offered in a wide variety of disciplines within the areas of biochemistry, genetics, molecular and cell biology, and population biology. Primary emphasis is placed on full-time, research-oriented graduate training.

The Department currently averages 40 students. About 75 percent of the students enroll directly following their undergraduate work; others come with a master's degree earned elsewhere. Virtually all departmental graduate students are supported by full tuition scholarships, as well as teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or fellowships. Supplemental summer fellowships are also available to qualified students.

Ph.D. Program
A minimum of 48 credits of coursework and dissertation taken at Syracuse University is required for the doctoral degree in biology. Students entering the department with a B.A. or B.S. will complete a minimum of coursework equivalent to that required for a master's degree. Students entering with a master's degree will complete at least 18 hours of formal coursework, at least 3/4 of which must be numbered at or above 600. Courses numbered below 500 may not be included in graduate degree programs. The distribution of coursework and dissertation credits will vary among students and will be based on evaluations by their Research Committees and the Graduate Committee.

M.S. P rogram
The M.S. degree requires 24 credits of formal coursework to be selected in consultation with the Graduate Committee and students' Research Committees; at least 12 credits must be at the 600 level or above, and six additional credits of thesis are required. A thesis based on original research must be developed and successfully defended in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Graduate School.

Ph.D. Program in Structural Biology/Biochemistry/Biophysics (SB3 Program)
Structural Biology/Biochemistry/Biophysics (SB3) is an interdisciplinary doctoral degree program. This collaborative program--offered jointly by Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry--is one of only a few doctoral programs in structural biology in the country.
