Our curriculum underwent major changes during 2002:

• If you are a student who began your program BEFORE Fall 2002, you have a choice of completing the old or the new curriculum. Old Curriculum information and requirements.

• If you are a student enrolled as a freshman 2002 or later, you must use the New Curriculum information and requirements (see Biology Degree Program - NEW Curriculum below).

Biology Degree Programs - NEW Curriculum

Please select from one of the following four Biology program options for detailed program requirements:

• The Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate professional degrees in biology or in the health professions. Because of its professional emphasis, students are encouraged to concentrate their studies in one of two major areas: A) cell and molecular biology, or B) ecology and evolution. Students must complete two Core courses in one of these areas. They select upper-division courses and laboratories in their Core area of concentration through consultations with their advisor.

• The Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree with Focus on Environmental Science offers students an opportunity to take courses in earth science, geography, chemistry and engineering that provide the necessary foundation to address environmental problems. The program requires the same basic courses as the BS degree in Biology with a concentration in ecology and evolution with substitution of upper-division elective courses in geology, earth science, biology, geography or engineering. The Environmental Science program has its own website.

• The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree is designed for students who wish to pursue science related careers outside biology and for whom some background in science may be useful, such as science journalism, business, or law.

• A Minor in Biology is designed for students who wish to augment other majors such as psychology, engineering, chemistry, or illustration with a biological component.
