I am primarily interested in understanding how access to the information in our genome is regulated. Epigenetic mechanisms maintain various patterns of gene expression by regulating chromatin structure. These mechanisms include posttranslational modification of the histone proteins, the proteins responsible for organizing DNA in the nucleus. I am interested in understanding the structural and functional properties of enzymes that target histone proteins for postttranslational modification, and how these modifications ultimately regulate chromatin structure. Techniques that are used include molecular biology, biochemistry and protein X-ray crystallography.
