Research Interests:
I
am interested in the anti-predatory behavior of animals
that live in groups. My research is focused on sentinel
behaviour in groups, and the associated costs and benefits
for both sentinels as well as non-sentinel group members.
I am studying this behavior in a tropical, social bird,
the Jungle Babbler (Turdoides striatus) in central
India. My interest also extends to the mixed species
flocks that the jungle babbler is very often a part
of. I am investigating the nature of interspecific associations
between the babbler and other (mixed) flock species
such as the greater racket-tailed drongo (Dicrurus
paradiseus), that sometimes acts as a sentinel for
the babbler groups, and the rufous tree-pie (Dendrocitta
vagabunda), that does not.
