These curriculum requirements are for students who began their studies in Biology in Fall 2002 or later. If you began your Biology studies BEFORE Fall 2002, you have a choice of completing the new curriculum found on this page OR the old curriculum.View OLD curriculum requirements pages here.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree is designed for students who wish to pursue science related careers outside biology and for whom some background in science may be useful, such as science journalism, business, or law.

B.A. Degree Requirements (45 to 47 credit hours)

INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY (students with Advanced Placement may omit introductory courses)
8 required hours

BIO 121/123: General Biology I & II

CORE COURSES IN BIOLOGY
12 required hours

Each of the following are 3 credit hours each:

BIO 326: Genetics and Cell Biology I (Fall)
BIO 327: Genetics and Cell Biology II (Spring)
BIO 345: Population Biology (Fall)
BIO 346: Physiological Ecology (Spring)

LABORATORY COURSES
3 hours minimum

Choose one of the following (worth 3 credit hours each):

BIO 427: Physiological Plant Ecology
BIO 435: Genetics Lab
BIO 445: Animal Physiological Ecology Lab
BIO 455: Physiology Lab
BIO 465: Molecular Biology Lab
BIO 475: Biochemistry Lab
BIO/GOL 485: Geology and Ecology of Regional Environments
CIE 471: Environmental Chemistry and Analysis

ELECTIVE COURSES
9 credits total

These can include any other 300 or higher level Biology Department courses except those designated not for majors. However, in any combination of Bio 360 (Biology Laboratory Assistant), Bio 419 (Biology Honors Seminar), Bio 460 (Research in Biology), and Bio 499/HNR (Biology Honors Thesis), a maximum of four credit hours can be applied toward the BA degree credit hour requirement.

By approval through a petition to the Biology Department, a maximum of six hours of 300 to 600 level courses related to Biology from other departments (for example, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Math, ESF) may be included as part of the elective requirement. Petitions can be obtained from the Undergraduate Secretary in Room 122 of Lyman Hall.

TOTAL BIOLOGY HOURS REQUIRED: 32
 

NON-DEPARTMENTAL B.A. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
13-15 required hours

Chem 106/107: General Chemistry I (4 credit hours)
Chem 116/117: General Chemistry II (4 credit hours)

And select one of the following:

Chem 275/276: Organic Chemistry I with lab (5 credit hours)

Or

Math 194: Precalculus (3-4 credit hours)
and either
Math 285: Calculus I or Math 295* (3-4 credit hours)

Or

Math 221 Probability & Statistics I or equivalent (3 credit hours)
and either
Math 284 Business Calculus or Math 285 Calculus I or Math 295*
(all are 3-4 credit hours)

*Either Math sequence satisfies the quantitative skills requirement in the liberal arts core.

TOTAL NON-BIOLOGY HOURS REQUIRED: 13-15
