These curriculum requirements are ONLY for students who began their studies in Biology BEFORE Fall 2002. If you began your Biology studies in Fall 2002 or later, please go to the NEW curriculum requirements pages by clicking here.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree (45 to 46 total required credit hours) is designed for students who wish to pursue science related careers outside biology and for whom some background in science may be useful, such as science journalism, business, or law.

Students in this program must complete the following course work. The courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics satisfy part of the standard course work needed for admission to graduate and health professions schools.

INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY (students with Advanced Placement may omit introductory courses)
4-8 hours

BIO 231: Biology of Organisms (4 required hours)
or
BIO 121/123: General Biology I & II (8 required hours)

CORE COURSES IN BIOLOGY
14 required hours

BIO 325: Cell Biology (3 required hours)
BIO 335: Genetics (3 required hours)
BIO 345: Population Biology (3 required hours)
BIO 355: General Physiology (3 required hours)
BIO 375: Biological Experimentation (2 required hours)

LABORATORY COURSE
3 required hours

Choose one of the following:

BIO 425: Cell Biology Lab
BIO 435: Genetics Lab
BIO 431: Population Genetics
BIO 455: Physiology Lab
BIO 465: Molecular Biology Lab
BIO 475: Biochemistry Lab

ELECTIVE COURSES
9 required hours

These can include BIO 360 (Biology Laboratory Assistant) or any 400 or higher level Biology Department courses. However, in any combination for BIO 360 (Biology Laboratory Assistant), BIO 419 (Biology Honors Seminar), BIO 460 (Research in Biology), and BIO 499 (Biology Honors Thesis), a maximum of four credit hours can be applied toward the B.A. degree credit hour requirement.

By approval from petition to the Biology Department, a maximum of six hours of 300 to 600 level courses from other departments (e.g., Bioengineering & Neuroscience, Chemistry, Physics, Math, College of Environmental Science and Forestry) may be included as part of the elective requirement. Petitions can be obtained from the Undergraduate Secretary in room 122 of Lyman Hall.

NON-BIOLOGY B.A. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Chem 106/107: General Chemistry I (4 required hours)
Chem 116/117: General Chemistry II (4 required hours)

AND select one of the following two-course sequences:

Chem 275/276: Organic Chemistry I (5 required hours)
Chem 285/286: Organic Chemistry II (5 required hours)

OR

Math 194: Precalculus* (3 required hours)
Math 285: Calculus I* (3 required hours)

OR

Math 221: Probability & Statistics I* or equivalent (3 required hours)
Math 284: Differential & Integral Calculus* (3 required hours)

*Either Math sequence satisfies the quantitative skills requirement in the liberal arts core but Math 295/296 is a prerequisite for all advanced level (300+) mathematics courses.
