Biology Majors
All incoming freshman or transfer students who have an interest in a Biology Major should be assigned an advisor in the Biology Department to be sure that all degree requirements are met. The best way to insure that you have an advisor in the Biology Department is to declare Biology as your major. This can be done at any time, and you can change your major at any time.

  • To declare Biology as your major, please see Deborah Herholtz, the Undergraduate Programs Secretary, 122 Lyman Hall, 443-9139 (email: herholtz@syr.edu).
  • If you have an advisor in another department, but you wish advice about a Biology major, contact Dr. Reed Hainsworth, principal advisor for Biology (011 Lyman, 443-2155; frhainsw@syr.edu).

Pre-Health Professions Students
You do not need to major in Biology to prepare for admission to health professional schools. These schools generally require specific courses in math, chemistry, physics and biology to be part of their applicants' undergraduate curricula. Some of these requirements are similar to requirements for the BS Degree in Biology. If you are interested in a health profession, you should seek advice through the Health Professions Advisory Program (see below).

Transfer to the College of Environmental Science and Forestry
Students who wish to transfer from Syracuse University to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry are advised in the Biology Department by Dr. W.T. Starmer, 020 Lyman Hall (443-2154; wstarmer@syr.edu).

Lifting Your Advising Hold For Registration
With online registration, Biology Department undergraduate advisors can give you advice and clear you for registration by email. If you email your advisor with your degree program (BA or BS) and the classes you have taken so far and those you plan to take next semester, your advisor can give you advice by return email. This will save you time and effort trying to schedule appointments, although your advisor will still be able to meet with you in person if you wish.

If you do not know your Biology advisor's email address, email your request to Deb Herholtz. If you do not have a Biology faculty advisor and you need advice, please email the Biology Department Principal Advisor, Dr. Hainsworth, frhainsw@syr.edu.

The following are some programs in career areas of interest to many Biology Majors:

Health Professions Advisory Program
Students interested in any of the health professions should make an appointment with the Health Professions Advisory Program (HPAP) (Hall of Languages Room 312, 315-443-2321) as soon as possible. When you complete an application for sponsorship by HPAP in your sophomore year, you will be assigned a pre-professional advisor. From then on you will have two advisors: an academic advisor in the Biology Department, and a health professions advisor to help you prepare credentials for application to a health professions school.

Graduate Programs in Biology (M.S., Ph.D.)
Students interested in a graduate degree in biology should obtain advice on selecting and applying to graduate schools no later than the end of their junior year. A Biology academic advisor or other Biology faculty in the areas of your interests for advanced study can give you advice on different schools, letters of recommendation, the Graduate Record Examinations, etc.

Teaching
Students interested in science teaching may wish to consider a dual major with the Biology Department and the Department of Science Teaching (offices located in Room 101 of Heroy Hall, telephone 315-443-2586) no later than the end of their sophomore year.

Related Careers
A booklet is available for students who want some background in Biology but are interested in a career outside Biology. "Preparing for Biology-Related Careers" can be found in the plastic bins next to the office in Lyman Hall. If you do not find a copy there, please ask for one from the Undergraduate Programs Secretary in Room 122 of Lyman Hall.

"Biological Sciences: What can I do with this degree?" is another information booklet that can be downloaded from this website in PDF format by clicking the link above.
