These curriculum requirements are ONLY for students who began their studies in Biology BEFORE Fall 2002. If you began your Biology studies in Fall 2002 or later, please go to the NEW curriculum requirements pages by clicking here.

The Biology Department offers four programs of undergraduate studies. Please select from one of the following four Biology program options for detailed program requirements:

  • The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree (55 to 57 total required credit hours) is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate professional degrees in biology or in the health professions.
  • The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree With Focus on Environmental Science (65 to 67 total required credit hours) is an interdisciplinary program designed for those interested in the application of biology to a broad range of environmental problems.
  • The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree (45 to 46 total required credit hours) is designed for students who wish to pursue science related careers outside biology and for whom some background in science may be useful, such as science journalism, business, or law.
  • A Minor in Biology (20 total required credit hours) is designed for students who wish to augment other majors such as psychology, engineering, chemistry, or illustration with a biological component.

In addition to the requirements shown on links from this site, you may refer to the Syracuse University Undergraduate Catalog. Information in official University documents takes priority in the event of conflict with the information presented here.

Biochemistry Degree Programs

Students interested in a BS Degree in Biochemistry should contact Dr. Laurence A. Nafie in the Department of Chemistry, 1-014 Center for Science and Technology, telephone 315-443-4109, or their Biology Department Advisor about the Biochemistry Degree Programs. There are two programs: One leads to a B.S. degree in Biochemistry; the other leads to a B.S. Degree in Biochemistry with Focus in Molecular Biology. Both programs involve taking Chemistry and Biology courses. NOTE: Biology majors who plan to major in these Biochemistry Degree Programs should change their major from Biology to Biochemistry.
