Biology is a dynamic, interesting and important field of study. The students and faculty in our department are interested in the study of life from molecular, cellular, organismal, community and global perspectives. Our undergraduate programs in biology provide excellent preparation for graduate or professional school programs and for careers in industry and governmental agencies. Students are also well prepared for medical, dental, or veterinary schools, or toenter the many specialized graduate programs in the biological sciences.

Our faculty and staff are dedicated to offering a strong and exciting undergraduate curriculum and we take great pride in the accomplishments of our students. Several opportunities exist to support student research by working in the labs of our faculty or by participating in our annual Undergraduate Research Conference. Opportunities outside of the classroom include the undergraduate student-run life sciences interest group TriBeta @ SU/ESF.

The Department of Biology offers four programs of undergraduate studies:

The Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate professional degrees in biology or in the health professions.

The Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree With Focus on Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary program designed for those interested in the application of biology to a broad range of environmental problems.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree is designed for students who wish to pursue science related careers outside biology and for whom some background in science may be useful, such as science journalism, business, or law.

A Minor in Biology is designed for students who wish to augment other majors such as psychology, engineering, chemistry, or illustration with a biological component.

The Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Biochemistry is offered through the Dept. of Biology and the Dept. of Chemistry. Please visit http:/biochem.syr.edu for more information.
